"Tree Planting Day with Youth from China and Japan"

Tree planting volunteers both from Japan and China engaged in a massive tree planting programs in Yichang at the center of Hubei Province in China. The Hubei Province is noted for its major hydroelectric power generation that supplies power to industries in China.

Since the year 2000, OISCA has continued to work on the "Reforestration Project to Protect the Catchment Areas of the Chang Jiang River"funded by the China Greenerization Fund established within the China/Japan Greenerization Fund Association. Over the past three years, this project has successfully planted about 250 hectares with some 300,000 trees,in cooperation with local governments and organizations. Many youth volunteers have taken part, both from Japan and Hubei Province, in the activities of the Project.

For the program held on 18 March, OISCA Japan mobilized some 50 youth and adult volunteers from OISCA Shizuoka, OISCA Toyama, and OISCA Academy located in Shizuoka, Japan. Local organizations in China, including those from Yichang municipalities, provided about 350 volunteers to plant about 1,5 hectares with some 3,000 camphor, mangolia and other evergreen trees.

The volunteers enjoyed functions and cultual exchange programs organized by the local government and volunteers in conjuction with the tree planting work. They shared the common understanding, that forestation represents one of the most important and pressing issues that all people, irrespective of cultures or ideology, have to concertedly tackle. This tree planting day, participated in by youths from both countries, proved to be an ideal occasion to strengthen international understanding and relationships among the youth.
