"Tree Planting for the "Bridge of Forests"

A tree planting program was held in the suburb of Jacarei, near San Paulo, Brazil, on December 8, 2002, and 600 seedlings were planted. Participants included youths from six Latin American countries who are now involved in the OISCA agricultural training program in Cotia, a women's group from Jacarei, members of the Fundacao CooperCotia de Educacao e Tecnologia Cooperural, volunteers from San Paulo, community people and children. Staff members from SENAC, an agency for business associations and education services, also joined in.

This project has been run by OISCA-Brazil since 2001 with support by the Foundation for the KEDANREN Committee on the Nature Conservation Fund, based in Tokyo, Japan. Now the forests have grown so tall that they can be seen from a distance, which encourages local people to work even harder.

On December 3, 2002, the third-term students of the Cotia School were given instruction about seedling management and tree planting techniques by Mr. Shinichi Oki, graduate of the Tokyo University for Agriculture. The lesson was given at the nursery center which is now under construction. The students graduated on December 14, 2002, so this was their final chance to take part in the tree planting program at the Cotia school, and they worked hard in the hot sun to cut grass and dig holes. Through their experiences they have learned that tree planting does not just involve planting trees, but also requires preparations in advance and careful management afterwards. Reforestation is a really important action that goes beyond boundaries.

The Cotia School trainees are expected to play key roles in their home countries by utilizing their knowledge of global environmental education and tree planting. The Cotia School is now poised to be an international center in the environmental field. Construction of the Global Environment Center has been completed in its school yard, (sponsored by the KEIDANREN Committee on the Nature Conservation Fund), and the correlation of global environmental education and reforestation activities are emphasized. Furthermore, SENAC instructors will start teaching once a week at the school.
