| OISCA Graduates Work to Support Palawan T.C. |
|
The Palawan Training Center, in the Philippines, was established in July 1979 and has become the base for OISCA graduates to implement various agricultural and environmental activities. Nature abounds on Palawan Island, and it is said to be the last environmental frontier of the country. However, people cannot develop forever by using only natural resources. Therefore, the OISCA graduates untiringly work to practice sustainable development. They implement agricultural training, upland community reforestation, mangrove reforestation, the Children's Forest Program, and cooperative organization. The agricultural training at the center includes rice and vegetable cultivation, rice milling, and livestock raising. Currently, it is run by seven staff members and accommodates 15 trainees. |

The leader of the center, Mr. Ernesto A. Darjuan says; "I have been working for the OISCA Palawan Training Center for more than 15 years. I feel that the Center is where I belong and is part of myself. If we lose the Center, for me, that means I lose half of myself. There are many OISCA graduates around the Center and they always came to help us, no matter how busy they are. So, if we receive less funding from Japan in the near future, maybe we won't be able to have a magnificent Center but, I have the strong belief and confidence that we can create a practical and peaceful Center, by pulling all of our forces together." The "force" Mr. Darjuan speaks of is the shared belief that they have a mission to pass on what they have learned about agriculture and the environment. Under it, they all work together as if they were one family. |
